fire time

  • 8 HOURS · SUPPLIES - INSTRUCTION

Fire is essential to heat homes, cook food, manipulate natural materials, and give light to darkness.  Anthropologists agree that the creation and use of fire is what separates us from all other species.  We are still a fire-based society, though it looks different from the days of old.  It takes planning, knowledge, wisdom, and experience to create fire and maintain it.  It needs to be watched, nurtured, and fed.

Spend a day gaining new knowledge about one of the five basic elements -- FIRE.  Fire has literally shaped the earth, and has propelled Homo sapiens to be one of the most successful species on earth.  Learn the art of creating, maintaining and using fire.  Learning the 40,000-year-old technique of hand-drill will instill a greater awareness and appreciation for how our ancestors once lived.

In this one-day Ro5 skills clinic you will learn the science of fire and how fire is used as a tool.  Modern fire lighting techniques, ignition sources for your “Go Bag” preparing you for day hikes as well as longer expeditions.  All things fire is emphasized with hands on experiences.

Join us to learn and practice skills about:

  • Fire physics, the fire triangle and tetrahedron of fire
  • The what, how and why of the all-powerful tinder bundle and how to recognize natural fire starters
  • Making your own Hand-Drill while you learn about its history
  • Safe knife skills
  • Other fire-by-friction techniques
